Crisis in Maritime Transport Due to the Collapse of Pier Six in Progreso

Published on August 15, 2024 by Andres Martinez

Progreso, Yucatán – Pier Six at the Specialized Container Terminal of the Progreso High Port has collapsed, halting operations and creating a crisis in maritime transport. Major shipping lines, such as Maersk Line, have diverted their vessels to the port of Veracruz due to structural damage at the pier, which was built 20 years ago.

Impact of the Pier Six Collapse

The collapse, which occurred last week, prevents ships ranging from 170 to 200 meters in length from docking to load and unload. Five vessels bound for Progreso have already been redirected to Veracruz, unloading goods such as perishables and marble. This has increased transportation costs, as containers must be transported by road to Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

Port Administration Measures

The Administration of the National Port System (Asipona) of Progreso has restricted access to Pier Six to carry out repairs, which could take between two and six months, possibly extending until December. Loading and unloading operations at the port have been significantly reduced, affecting import and export logistics.

Important Note: Currently, only vessels from Linea Peninsular Inc., which operates the Panama City, Florida – Progreso route, continue to arrive, using the cranes of their own ships at Pier Five of the remote terminal. The situation is critical, and if repairs are delayed, diversions to Veracruz will continue, increasing transportation costs.

Implications for Logistics and Transportation

The partial closure of the port of Progreso has forced logistics operators to adapt their routes and transportation methods. With the increase in costs and delivery times due to additional road transport, companies will need to plan carefully to mitigate the effects of this crisis on their operations.

“Asipona of Progreso will report on the progress of repairs and appreciates the understanding of all those affected. This situation highlights the importance of having robust and well-maintained port infrastructure.”
