Port of Manzanillo: Growing Congestion?

The Port of Manzanillo, recognized as Mexico’s most important and active port, is currently facing congestion that is raising concerns within the logistics sector. This port, crucial for importers and exporters from Asian countries, handles most exports destined for the United States, Canada, Guatemala, and Colombia.

Causes and Effects of the Congestion

On Monday, October 21, the port registered 10 general cargo vessels anchored in the outer bay, reinforcing the perception of growing congestion within port infrastructure. This situation is not isolated: on October 17, the port recorded 17 anchored vessels, including 10 general cargo and 4 container ships. According to the private sector, the issue began approximately 11 months ago with modifications to the Port Operating Rules that limited the unloading of general cargo ships to prioritize other types of cargo.

This delay at the port affects the movement of key materials like steel rolls, essential for the automotive industry. It also impacts the packaging industry, covering products such as cans for soft drinks, tuna, beer, and construction materials necessary for large-scale metal structures. These delays cascade through the supply chain, affecting production in multiple industrial sectors.

Comparison with Export Processes from Germany

Meanwhile, export processes from Germany to Mexico maintain more stable delivery times. For LCL (less-than-container load) shipments, the process takes an average of 5 business days, while FCL (full container load) shipments require around 15 business days, assuming smooth communication between the parties involved.

Prospects and Measures to Ease Congestion

In response, the government and port authorities are evaluating various strategies to improve flow at the port, including potential investments in infrastructure and technology to expedite unloading and the movement of goods. These measures aim to mitigate the negative impact that congestion could have on the national economy, especially in high-impact sectors like automotive and construction.
