Mexico Boosts Trade and Logistics with Puerto Progreso and the Maya Train
The Government of Mexico has confirmed the commencement of construction for Puerto Progreso and progress on consolidating the Maya Train as a key system for freight transport in the country’s southeast. These initiatives aim to transform the region into a significant logistics and commercial hub, strengthening both tourism and the flow of goods.
Puerto Progreso: A Deep-Sea Port for the Future
Puerto Progreso will feature an 80-hectare platform, positioning it as a state-of-the-art deep-sea port. This port not only stands out as one of the country’s most relevant tourist connection points but also boasts the largest remote terminal in the world. Current developments include:
- Environmental impact and soil mechanics studies: Laying the groundwork for sustainable construction.
- Dredging operations: Scheduled to begin soon, led by the Mexican Navy, to prepare the site.
These upgrades will equip the port to handle a larger volume of goods, boosting both the local and national economies. It is also expected to become a strategic point for the export of agricultural, manufactured, and petroleum-based products.
Maya Train: More Than a Tourist Project
The Maya Train will not only connect tourist destinations but is also emerging as a crucial railway system for freight transport. Its logistics plan includes:
- Five intermodal terminals: Designed to facilitate efficient goods exchange between different modes of transportation.
- Four operation yards and a fuel unloading rail spur: Supporting seamless freight handling.
- 1,553 kilometers of railway: Including a key bypass and three branch lines between Poxilá and Progreso.
This project is expected to significantly improve the region’s connectivity, reduce logistics costs, and attract new national and international investments.
Recent Progress and Prospects
In recent months, the Maya Train has achieved significant milestones, such as acquiring specialized equipment for building intermodal terminals and agreements with private companies to ensure railway operations. Additionally, Puerto Progreso has joined sustainability initiatives aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of construction and promoting responsible development.
The integration of these two projects reinforces the Mexican Government’s commitment to developing the country’s southeast, transforming it into a central hub for foreign trade, logistics, and tourism.
“These transformative projects demonstrate Mexico’s commitment to modernizing its logistics and trade infrastructure, creating opportunities for economic growth and regional development.” – Government of Mexico
