Port of Manzanillo: Expansion Project to Handle up to 10 Million Containers Annually
The Port of Manzanillo, one of Mexico’s most significant maritime hubs, is undergoing a transformative expansion with the Nuevo Manzanillo Project. This ambitious initiative aims to quadruple its current capacity, enabling the port to handle up to 10 million containers annually. Spanning 1,880 hectares of land and sea, this project is set to strengthen Manzanillo’s position as a strategic hub for international trade.
Modern and Sustainable Infrastructure
The expansion will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including:
- 18 meters of depth: Accommodates large-scale vessels.
- Four specialized terminals: Containers, hydrocarbons, general cargo, and storage.
- Thermoelectric plant: Reduces ecological impact with efficient energy generation.
- Electric cranes: Capable of handling 65 tons, replacing fuel-powered models for greater sustainability.
Development Phases
The project is divided into two key phases:
Phase One (In Progress)
- Dredging: Expanding depth for large vessels.
- Land preparation: Readying terminal areas.
- Infrastructure: Construction of a four-lane reversible highway to optimize logistics.
Phase Two
- Development and specialization of terminals.
- Concession to logistics operators.
- Estimated completion: 2030.
Recent Developments
Significant progress has been made in dredging and land preparation, while the reversible highway is under construction. Meetings with international investors are ongoing to define terminal concessions, potentially attracting new logistics operators.
Economic and Strategic Impact
This expansion aligns with Mexico’s goals of modernizing infrastructure and bolstering the national economy. By increasing its capacity, the Port of Manzanillo will enhance trade connectivity between Asia and the Americas, fostering regional growth and improving operational efficiency.
The Nuevo Manzanillo Project will elevate the port to a world-class logistics hub, combining innovation with sustainability to support the demands of global trade.“The Port of Manzanillo represents the future of trade in the region, balancing growth with sustainability while driving economic development for Mexico.” – Project Lead
