3.4% Increase in Vehicle Maritime Traffic in Mexico: Insights and Details of 2024 Growth
From January to October 2024, vehicle maritime transportation in Mexico saw a significant 3.4% increase in deep-sea traffic compared to the same period last year. This growth highlights the crucial role played by Mexican ports in the global logistics sector, particularly those located on the Pacific and Gulf-Caribbean coasts.
The Pacific Region: Modest Growth with Mixed Results
In the Pacific region, vehicle maritime transport reached 725,231 units in 2024, representing a 1.4% increase from the 715,253 units of the previous year. Among the most notable ports, Mazatlán, Sinaloa, stood out with a remarkable 13.8% growth, rising from 128,006 vehicles in 2023 to 145,694 units this year.
However, not all Pacific ports showed positive results. Manzanillo, Colima, experienced a sharp drop of 61.3%, transporting only 1,039 units in 2024 compared to 2,625 the previous year. Meanwhile, Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, the principal port on the Pacific coast, saw a slight decrease of 1.0%, with 578,498 vehicles transported in 2024 compared to 584,559 in 2023.
The Gulf-Caribbean Region: Outstanding Growth
On the other hand, the Gulf-Caribbean region showed even more impressive growth, with a 4.6% increase in the volume of vehicles transported. A total of 1,227,265 units were recorded in 2024, compared to 1,173,376 the previous year. Among the ports in this region, Altamira, Tamaulipas, was one of the biggest winners, growing by 20.4%, from 354,097 vehicles in 2023 to 426,385 in 2024.
A particularly remarkable case was the port of Tuxpan, Veracruz, which saw an impressive 146.4% increase, transporting 79,693 units this year compared to 32,343 units the previous year.
Overall Performance and Future Outlook
Although the port of Veracruz experienced a slight decrease of 8.4%, handling 721,174 vehicles in 2024 compared to 786,936 in 2023, the overall balance for both coasts was positive. Together, 1,952,498 vehicles were transported in 2024, surpassing the 1,888,629 units of 2023.
This growth in vehicle maritime traffic reinforces Mexico’s position as a strategic hub for global logistics, despite the performance variations across different ports. The data underscores the importance of diversification and resilience in port infrastructure, positioning the country as a key player in the international vehicle trade.
