Mexico Imposes 35% Tariffs to Protect the Textile Industry

In a strategic move to protect the Mexican textile industry, which provides jobs to approximately 400,000 people, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo signed a decree introducing temporary tariffs of 35% on 138 categories of finished textile goods and 15% on 17 categories of textiles. This decree also expands the list of products restricted from being imported under the Manufacturing, Maquiladora, and Export Services Program.

Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, head of the Ministry of Economy, explained that the purpose of the decree is to prevent the abuse of current regulations that have harmed the national textile sector. The government aims to stop fraudulent practices where companies were importing intermediate products for manufacturing under the guise of export purposes, but were instead selling them in the local market, avoiding taxes in the process.

Impact on the Textile Industry and Job Protection

This decree is a crucial step in safeguarding one of the most important sectors in Mexico, as it will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the domestic textile industry. By curbing illegal imports and protecting local businesses, the government aims to maintain the competitiveness of Mexican textile products in the global market while supporting local jobs.

Challenges of Balancing International Trade and National Protectionism

While the measure is intended to protect the national industry, it also raises discussions around the balance between international trade and national protectionism. Experts will be closely monitoring its long-term effects on both the textile sector and the broader economic landscape of Mexico.

The imposition of these tariffs marks a critical moment in the government’s efforts to support the Mexican textile industry and ensure its growth and sustainability.
