Mexicana Reopens Its Route to Campeche

Last Sunday, Mexicana de Aviación resumed its route between Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and Campeche, marking a milestone in the country’s air connectivity. Flight 1700 took off at 07:40 AM aboard a Boeing 737-800, landing at Alberto Acuña Ongay International Airport in Campeche after a one-hour and 15-minute journey.

Flight Frequency and Operations

This route will operate three times a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays. It is important to note that Aeroméxico also serves this destination with two weekly flights.

Mexicana’s Strategic Adjustments

This reopening is the second to take place following the January 6 announcement of the suspension of eight routes by Mexicana de Aviación. The first route to be resumed was Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. President Claudia Sheinbaum explained that these suspensions are part of a strategic review of the airline’s operations for 2025, aimed at optimizing resources and improving passenger experience.

Mexicana’s Challenges and Future Plans

Mexicana de Aviación, relaunched in December 2023 under state administration, has faced significant challenges in its first year of operations. With a market share of less than 1% in the domestic sector, the airline transported 382,000 passengers—far from its goal of three million annual travelers by 2027. Despite these challenges, the company plans to strengthen its fleet by incorporating new Embraer E2 aircraft starting in May 2025, which will allow for the expansion and consolidation of its route network.

Boosting Tourism and Regional Development

The resumption of the AIFA-Campeche route not only reinforces connectivity between the nation’s capital and southeastern Mexico but also boosts tourism and the local economy. Campeche, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, offers a rich culinary scene, stunning archaeological sites, and a vibrant cultural life. This air connection facilitates access to the walled city, enabling more travelers to discover its charms while contributing to regional development.

In summary, the reactivation of this route by Mexicana de Aviación demonstrates the airline’s commitment to strengthening domestic connectivity and overcoming operational challenges, offering passengers more travel options while promoting tourism and economic growth in key Mexican destinations.
