Lázaro Cárdenas Port Reaches Milestone with Three Millionth Vehicle Unloaded

Lázaro Cárdenas Port has reached a significant milestone by unloading its three-millionth unit at the Specialized Automotive Terminal (TEA), operated by SSA Marine Mexico. This terminal, inaugurated in 2010, is the first of its kind in the country and has been instrumental in positioning Mexico as a key player in international automotive trade.

Consistent Growth in Automotive Cargo

In recent years, the port has shown consistent growth in handling automotive cargo, moving 646,578 units in 2022, 699,133 in 2023, and 675,385 in 2024. This increase reflects the commitment of the Lázaro Cárdenas Port Community to strengthening its infrastructure and aligning with the objectives of the National Port System.

State-of-the-Art Infrastructure

The TEA covers an area of 46.5 hectares, with a static capacity for 16,500 vehicles and a dynamic capacity of 600,000 units annually. Its 600-meter-long and 12-meter-deep dock allows for the simultaneous docking of two RoRo vessels, ensuring efficient and secure operations.

A Key Hub for International Trade

Lázaro Cárdenas is the only port in Mexico with a specialized automotive terminal serving clients from major Asian automotive companies, including more than 11 Chinese firms that have entered the Mexican market over the past three years. This makes it a strategic hub for vehicle imports and exports in the country.

Mexico’s Growing Role in Automotive Trade

At the national level, between January and September 2024, Mexican ports handled 1,742,940 vehicles, representing a 4.4% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth highlights Mexico’s importance as a manufacturing and export hub for the automotive industry.
