Rail Freight Movement in Mexico Increased by 16.3% Year-on-Year in January
During the first four weeks of 2025, the volume of freight moved by rail in Mexico reached 97,988 railcars and intermodal units, a 16.3% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the American Association of Railroads.
Significant Growth in Rail Cargo
In the week ending January 25, 2025, Mexican railways transported 14,527 loaded railcars, a 10.6% increase from the same period the previous year. Intermodal units totaled 11,993, reflecting a 27.4% rise.
Comparison with Canada and the U.S.
In Canada, 88,763 loaded railcars were transported, an increase of 1.9%, while intermodal units reached 67,323, experiencing a slight 0.2% decline. In the U.S., rail traffic for the same week totaled 454,797 railcars and intermodal units, reflecting a 2.5% decrease.

Overall North American Rail Freight Trends
Combined, weekly rail freight movement in the three countries reached 637,403 railcars and intermodal units, representing a 1.0% decrease from the same period in 2024.
