Vehicle Marking: A Regulation in Progress and Without Clear Direction

The marking of federal transport units in Mexico has been a topic of debate in recent months. Initially, on February 7, 2025, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT) published a regulation in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) requiring transport units to display visible alphanumeric identification numbers, known as vehicle marking, with a 90-day implementation period. However, the SICT later clarified that this measure would not be mandatory or subject to penalties, responding to industry concerns over costs, effectiveness, and potential abuses by authorities.

Regulation and Industry Concerns

The initiative was introduced at the request of the National Guard to facilitate vehicle identification in criminal cases. However, its implementation has sparked divided opinions among transporters and industry experts, who question its effectiveness and fear it could lead to extortion.

Safety and Transparency Challenges

While the measure aims to enhance road security, concerns persist about potential misuse and additional financial burdens on transport operators. Industry representatives argue that alternative solutions, such as strengthening surveillance and improving vehicle registration databases, may be more effective.
